J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 492729  Size: SH
  4. Remove the front park brake cable from the cable guides.
  5. Pull down on the intermediate park brake cable (2) near the park brake cable connector (1).
  6. Disconnect the intermediate park brake cable (2) from the park brake connector (1).

  7. Object Number: 106213  Size: SH
  8. Remove the right park brake cable guide bolt (3).

  9. Object Number: 751605  Size: SH
  10. Disconnect the right rear park brake cable (2) from the intermediate park brake cable connector (3).
  11. Use the J 37043 to depress the right brake cable locking tabs (2).
  12. Remove the right park brake cable (2) from the park brake cable support bracket (1).

  13. Object Number: 728147  Size: SH
  14. Use the J 37043 to depress the right park brake cable locking tabs.
  15. Remove the right park brake cable (2) from the caliper park brake cable bracket (1).
  16. Disconnect the right park brake cable (2) from the park brake actuator lever (3).
  17. Remove the right park brake cable (2) from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 751605  Size: SH
  1. Install the right park brake cable (2) to the park brake cable support bracket (1).
  2. Press the right park brake cable into the park brake cable support bracket (1). Ensure that the locking tabs are properly seated.

  3. Object Number: 728147  Size: SH
  4. Connect the right park brake cable (2) to the park brake actuator lever (3).
  5. Install the right park brake cable (2) to the caliper park brake cable bracket (1). Ensure that the locking tabs are properly seated.
  6. Connect the intermediate park brake cable connector (3) to the right park brake cable (2).

  7. Object Number: 492729  Size: SH
  8. Pull down on the intermediate park brake cable (2) near the park brake cable connector (1).
  9. Connect the intermediate park brake cable (2) to the park brake connector (1).

  10. Object Number: 106213  Size: SH
  11. Install the right park brake cable (2) into the park brake cable guide (1).
  12. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  13. Install the right park brake cable guide bolt (3).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the right park brake cable guide bolt to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  15. Install the front park brake cable to the cable guides.
  16. Install the right tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. To ensure that the park brake cable retainers are seated, cycle the park brake pedal 1 to 2 times.
