A COMMENT OF COOLANT LOSS ON SOME 1984 2.5L ENGINES MAY BE THE RESULT OF A CASTING SEPARATION IN THE LIFTER BORE AREA. IF PRESSURE TESTING SHOWS NO VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF COOLANT LOSS, REMOVE THE COVER FROM THE VALVE LIFTER AREA AND INSPECT THE CASTING JUST ABOVE THE LIFTERS (SEE ILLUSTRATION). WITH THE ENGINE WARM AND PRESSURE APPLIED, COOLANT SHOULD BE VISIBLE USING "BLACK LIGHT". IF THE CONDITION IS EVIDENT, THE CYLINDER BLOCK WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. NOTE: CAREFULLY INSPECT THE CAMSHAFT AND LIFTERS IN THE AREA OF THE SEPARATION TO INSURE NO DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED FROM DILUTION OF LUBRICATION.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
