1982-84 6000, PHOENIX, SUNBIRD, GRAND AM, AND FIERO MODELS EQUIPPED WITH THM 125C TRANSAXLE
A 1982-1984 THM 125C transaxle may exhibit a harsh Park/Neutral to Drive engagement. Refer to Figure 1 for transaxle identification information.
At the start of production (SOP) 1985, all THM 125C transaxles were built with a new forward clutch assembly. This change eliminated the check ball in the forward clutch housing (Figure 2, Item 624--arrow indicates check ball location) and provided bleed orifices in the forward clutch piston assembly (Figure 2, Item 629) .
The new forward clutch housing (Part Number 8653977) is used to service all 1982-1984 THM 125C models. The new forward clutch piston and seal package (Part Number 8637973) must be installed when replacing a forward clutch housing.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
