INTERMITTENT CRANK/ NO CRANK HARD TO CRANK CONDITIONS

1984 FIERO

Some 1984 Fiero vehicles may exhibit an intermittent crank or a non-crank condition, or a hot weather intermittent hard-to-crank condition. Solenoid wires may also appear charred, cut, or abraded. Stalling, intermittent firing of the engine, or all instrument panel lights flickering may accompany the crank condition.

These conditions are caused by (a) excess exposure to exhaust pipe heat in the starter area and/or by (b) the starter heat shield metal foil cutting the purple colored solenoid wire.

To correct the conditions, use the following procedures:

(a) Add insulation cover, part number 10042766, to the positive battery cable by folding the cover over the cable adjacent to the starter and exhaust pipe. (See post December 1984 Fieros for example.) Be certain the silver part of the wrap is on the outside for heat deflection. Use a stapler to attach cover to cable.

NOTE: Use care when attaching cover with stapler device to avoid damaging wiring.

(b) On vehicles not equipped with a starter heat shield, add shield, part number 10035978, and retainer, part number 10036058.

(c) On vehicles equipped with a starter heat shield, remove sharp edges by cutting the foil and bending it back away from any wires.
