ROOF CREAK
----- Roof fasteners on some 1984-1987 Fieros could lose torque/clamp load over time due to body flex; loss of clamp load allows for roof movement; resultant motion combined with plastic panel to spaceframe contact produces the creak.
1. Remove headliner from car. (Refer to 1987 Fiero Service Manual, page 8J-3).
2. Retorque bolts around perimeter of vista vent region to 10 N.m. These bolts will already have a threadlocker applied to them and should maintain proper torque (refer to Figure 1).
3. Remove nuts around outside perimeter of roof. Apply a drop of Loctite 242 serviceable threadlocker (P/N 12345382) or equivalent to the inside of the nut. Retorque nut to 10 N.m. (refer to Figure 1).
4. Reinstall headliner using the procedure on page 8J-3 of the 1987 Fiero Service Manual.
1. Perform above steps.
2. Per Figure 2, lift vista vent seal at area of hinges and drill 2 1/8" diameter holes forward and inboard of each existing vista vent hinge rivet (2/side).
3. Install 2 1/8" x 1/2" steel pop rivets in previously drilled holes.
4. Reseat vista vent seal.
5. On 1986-87 GT models only, perform portion of service bulletin 86-10-12 pertaining to drip rails.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
