A condition exists whereby the stainless steel fire ring of the exhaust manifold gasket can separate from the graphoil gasket material, migrate to the edge of the exhaust manifold port flange, and cause an audible exhaust leak. The condition is caused by movement of the exhaust manifold port flange during heating and cooling cycles and is most often found at the No. 1 or the No. 2 port.
To correct this condition, replace right and left bank exhaust manifold gaskets, P/N 10034334 with two P/N 10051512 exhaust manifold gaskets; replace nine P/N 10032112 bolt and lock washer assemblies with nine P/N 360584 bolts; replace three P/N 10032191 stud bolt and lockwasher assemblies with three P/N 373928 studs (refer to illustration 1). Refer to section 6A2, pages 12, 14 and 15 of the Service Manual for disassembly and reassembly instructions.
Use applicable labour times and operation numbers.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
