TRANSAXLE RATTLE,BUZZ NOISE NEW 5 SPEED M/T SHIFT CABLE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985 and Early 1986 Fieros With 5-Speed Manual Transaxles

Some 1985 and early 1986 Fieros equipped with 5-speed manual transaxles may exhibit a transaxle gear rattle or buzz type noise most noticeable during acceleration or deceleration in the 50-90 km/ph (30-55 mph). speed range. This noise may be audible in the passenger compartment on some vehicles and is usually transmitted by the shifter cables.

This noise condition may be repaired by replacing both transaxle shift cables with the cables specified below.

Description Part Number ----------- ----------- Shift Lever Cable Assembly 14105617 Shift Select Lever Cable Assembly 14105618

The above cables have improved isolation and will help reduce the level of noise transmitted into the passenger compartment.

On 1985 vehicles it will be necessary to exchange the rubber grommets (used to seal the cable at the firewall cutout) from the old shift select cable to the new cable since the grommet on the new cable is larger. This can be done by cutting the grommets radially and removing them from each of the shift select cables. Next, install the grommet from the old cable onto the new cable and seal the cut with '3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive', P/N 08001, or its equivalent.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
