WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF FIRST GEAR DUE TO THIN DETENT HOLDER

MODELS AFFECTED 1986-1/2 FIERO MODELS WITH 5 SPEED MANUAL --------------- TRANSMISSION (HM-282) AND 2.8L ENGINE

BULLETIN COVERS:

Some 1986-1/2 Fiero vehicles equipped with a HM-282 five-speed manual transaxle may have a condition of not being able to shift out of first gear. This is caused by a detent holder that allows the 1-2 shift rail interlock pin to partially come out of the detent holder bore, preventing shifting of the transaxle out of first gear.

To correct this condition, install a thicker detent holder to assure proper retention of the interlock pin.

DATE OF PRODUCTION CHANGE: (Figure 1) -------------------------- Beginning September 8, 1986, all HM-282 transaxles were assembled with the thicker detent holder, thereby eliminating the need for the addition of a spacer plate. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) break- points are listed below:

SERVICE ACTION: (Figure 2) --------------- IMPORTANT: When servicing a 1986 HM-282 built before September 8, 1986, make sure the detent block spacer plate (169 (A)) is reinstalled (if so equipped) during assembly. If there is not a spacer plate, measure the detent holder width. If it is 15mm (0.59 in.) or 16.5mm (0.65 in), replace it with a thicker detent holder, 18mm (0.71 in.) listed under Service Parts Information (Figure 3) .
