GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1980 PONTIAC FIREBIRDS EQUIPPED WITH 301 CID V-8 TURBOCHARGED ENGINES EXHIBIT A CONDITION WHICH MAY CAUSE FAILURE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING CONDENSER INLET PIPE. FAILURE OF THE INLET PIPE WOULD CAUSE THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM TO BECOME INOPERATIVE.
TO REMEDY THIS CONDITION, A SUPPORT BRACKET WILL BE INSTALLED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES.

INVOLVED ARE ALL 1980 PONTIAC FIREBIRD MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 4.9 LITER TURBO (301 CID) 4 BBL. V-8 BUILT AT GMAD NORWOOD AND GMAD VAN NUYS.
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE. WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED VEHICLE INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.
DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.
OWNER NOTIFICATION
OWNERS OF VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN, WHOSE ADDRESSES ARE KNOWN, WILL BE NOTIFIED BY PONTIAC MOTOR DIVISION.
A SAMPLE OWNER LETTER IS INCLUDED IN THIS BULLETIN.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. OPEN HOOD AND INSTALL FENDER COVER.
2. SLIDE BOTH RETAINING NUTS ON SUPPORT BRACKET AND POSITION NUTS OVER BRACKET HOLES (SEE ILLUSTRATION.)
3. INSTALL BRACKET ON CONDENSER INLET TUBE FORWARD OF HIGH PRESSURE LINE CONNECTION (SEE ILLUSTRATION).
4. INSTALL SCREW THROUGH BRACKET AND NUT AT CONDENSER END OF BRACKET AND TIGHTEN UNTIL SCREW IS FULLY DRIVEN, SEATED AND NOT STRIPPED.
5. POSITION OPPOSITE END OF SUPPORT BRACKET UNDER RADIATOR SUPPORT BAFFLE (SEE ILLUSTRATION).
6. INSTALL REMAINING SCREWS THROUGH EXISTING RADIATOR SUPPORT BAFFLE HOLE INTO SUPPORT BRACKET NUT AND TIGHTEN UNTIL SCREW IS FULLY DRIVEN, SEATED AND NOT STRIPPED.
7. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.
EACH VEHICLE MODIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE WILL REQUIRE A CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABE. EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER,THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE, AND THE DATE VEHICLE WAS CAMPAIGNED. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR BALLPOINT PEN. WHEN INSTALLING LABEL, CLEAN THE SURFACE OF THE RADIATOR UPPER MOUNTING PANEL IN THE AREA OF EMISSION LABEL AND APPLY THE CAMPAIGN LABEL.
ENCLOSED WITH YOUR COPY OF THIS BULLETIN ARE THE FOLLOWING:
A LIST OF THOSE VEHICLES INVOLVED, WHICH OUR RECORDS INDICATE ARE IN YOUR GEOGRAPHICAL AREA, IS ATTACHED FOR YOUR FOLLOW-UP. A SPECIAL COMPUTER DATA CARD (FORM 4425) IS FURNISHED FOR EACH VEHICLE ON YOUR LIST FOR REPORTING COMPLETION. CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABELS ARE FURNISHED FOR INSTALLATION ON THE RADIATOR UPPER MOUNTING PANEL TO IDENTIFY CARS COMPLETED.
IF A VEHICLE HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED OR SOLD TO ANOTHER LOCATION, PLEASE COMPLETE THE NEW NAME AND ADDRESS SECTION ON THE ENCLOSED FORM 4425 AND FORWARD TO YOUR PONTIAC ZONE OFFICE.
PARTS INFORMATION
ONE A/C CONDENSER BRACKET PACKAGE WILL BE FURNISHED "NO CHARGE" TO YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR EACH VEHICLE ON YOUR VIN LIST. THE PACKAGE INCLUDES ONE (1) BRACKET, TWO (2) NUTS AND TWO (2) SCREWS.
RECORDING COMPLETION
CAMPAIGN COMPLETION WILL BE RECORDED FROM PROPERLY COMPLETED AND PAID WARRANTY CLAIMS AND DEALER COMPLETION OF SPECIAL COMPUTER DATA CARDS. OWNERS ARE BEING ASKED TO PRESENT THE OWNER REPLY CARD FOR IDENTIFICATION TO THEIR DEALER AT THE TIME THEY BRING IN THEIR VEHICLE TO HAVE THE CAMPAIGN PERFORMED.
THE COMPUTER DATA CARDS FOR THE VEHICLES SHOWN ON YOUR LIST ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS BULLETIN. THIS CARD IS PREPRINTED WITH THE VI NUMBER, DEALER CODE AND CAMPAIGN NUMBER.
