On some 1982 Firebirds with 2.8L V-6 or 5.0L V-8 CFI engines, a low speed driveability condition may develop. This condition may be a tip in stumble, low speed surge and roughness, or both. The condition may be a result of rich mixture due to malfunction of the canister purge solenoid.
On vehicles which exhibit the above driveability condition, check the canister purge solenoid as shown on the following diagnostic charts.
When the diagnostic check indicates replacement of the canister purge solenoid is necessary, use kit, Part Number 14066587 to replace canister purge solenoid, Part Number 1997553 (last three digits are stamped on the metal solenoid bracket). This kit contains canister purge solenoid, Part Number 1997642 (varnished coil) and protective cover, Part Number 14066503. The cover is installed by sliding over the solenoid before mounting.
When it is necessary to replace canister purge solenoid, Part Number 1997642 (late production), replace with Part Number 1997642, but be sure to reuse the protective cover from the original installation.
Use applicable labor operation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
