RUBBING NOISE STEERING COLUMN LUBRICATION OF RUBBER BUSHING

SOME 1982 'F' SERIES VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A RUBBING NOISE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE TURNING. THIS RUBBING CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY THE RUBBER STEERING SHAFT BUSHING LOCATED INSIDE THE LOWER END OF THE STEERING COLUMN MAST JACKET. THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE CAN BE USED TO LUBRICATE THE RUBBER BUSHING. 1.REMOVE THE LEFT-HAND HUSH PANEL. 2.REMOVE ONE (1) BOLT, I.P. BRACKET TO STEERING COLUMN (SEE ILLUSTRATION). 3.THREAD A 457 MM (18 IN.) PIECE OF AIR SHOCK HOSE INTO THE BOLT HOLE AND DOWN INSIDE THE COLUMN UNTIL THE HOSE CONTACTS THE RUBBER BUSHING. 4.SPRAY A LUBRICANT (LUBRIPLATE OR EQUIVALENT) INTO THE HOSE TO THOROUGHLY SOAK THE RUBBER BUSHING. 5.REMOVE THE AIR SHOCK HOSE AND REPLACE THE BOLT IN THE STEERING COLUMN. 6.REPLACE THE LEFT-HAND HUSH PANEL.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
