SPEEDO - DRIVEN GEAR LEAK ZINC SLEEVE BRINELL WEAR

Some 1983 and early 1984 Firebirds with Warner Gear five-speed manual transmissions may exhibit oil leakage at the speedo driven gear sleeve area. The zinc sleeve (Figure 1) tends to wear which causes leakage.

A new steel sleeve, P/N 3869912, (Figure 2) has been released and is in production in vehicles built after VIN N165187 at Norwood and VIN L193035 at Van Nuys.

Whenever a leak is diagnosed in this area, it is imperative that the sleeve and seal be replaced. The sleeve, P/N 3869912, is part of a kit, P/N 345215, which includes a new seal and instructions.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
