INOPERATIVE TPS INSTALL HEAT SHIELD

1982-86 6000 AND FIREBIRD MODELS WITH 2.5L L4 (ENGINE CODE R AND 2) ENGINE 1985-86 GRAND AM MODELS WITH 2.5L L4 (ENGINE CODE U) ENGINE 1984-86 FIERO MODELS WITH 2.5L L4 (ENGINE CODE R) ENGINE 1982-84 PHOENIX MODELS WITH 2.5L L4 (ENGINE CODE R) ENGINE 1982-86 SUNBIRD MODELS WITH 1.8L L4 (ENGINE CODE O) ENGINE

Customer comments of reduced engine performance, poor idle, or engine surge, may be received on subject models. This condition is often accompanied by intermittent or steady Check Engine Light and Trouble Code 21 or 22.

After a vehicle has been accurately diagnosed as having an intermittent electrical signal from the Throttle Position Sensor, replace the sensor with TPS service kit, P/N 17078274. At the same time, remove the factory installed TPS heat shield attached by the EGR bolt and replace it with a new heat shield service kit, P/N 17111750 (Refer to Figure 1) . The contents of the service kit are :

NOTICE:

1984-86 FIERO MODELS WITH 2.5L L4 ENGINES MUST USE TPS SERVICE KIT, P/N 17078274, WITH THE HEAT SHIELD SERVICE KIT, P/N 17111750. THE ATTACHING SCREWS PROVIDED WITH THE HEAT SHIELD SERVICE KIT (HEX HEAD) MUST BE USED WITH THE REPLACEMENT TPS.

Whenever a new 300 Series TBI is purchased from WDDGM and it is not complete with the 17078274 (AC Logo) TPS and the stainless steel heat sheild, it must be retro-fitted to include the service parts described in this bulletin.

Use applicable labor time and labor operation numbers for TPS replacement.

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE:

1. Remove air cleaner assembly.

2. Remove and discard existing heat shield attached to EGR mounting bolt, by removing that bolt only.

3. Remove and discard existing TPS and attaching screws.

4. Install replacement TPS (1) and heat shield (3) using attaching screws (2) provided with TPS heat shield service kit. Discard screws supplied with replacement TPS.

Tighten attaching screws to 18 in. lbs. (2.0 Nm).

5. FIERO MODELS ONLY: Inspect TPS connector lead per bulletin 86-8-10.

6. Install air cleaner assembly.
