IMPROVED REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR CRACKS IN LEFT MOTOR COMPARTMENT SIDE RAILS (INNER)

MODELS AFFECTED 1982-85 FIREBIRD MODELS --------------- WITH STANDARD SUSPENSION

Some 1982-85 Firebird models with standard suspension may experience a crack on the inside surface of the motor compartment side rail.

To repair this condition:

1. Disconnect battery and remove wheel. 2. Remove all coatings to bare metal, using sand blasting or equivalent method 1/2 inch either side of crack. 3. Drill a 1/4 inch hole at the end of the crack. 4. M.I.G. weld the crack using American Welding Society Standard E7056 wire, and 75% Argon 25% C02 gas.

NOTICE: ONLY M.I.G. IS APPROVED FOR THIS APPLICATION. GAS AND ARC WELDING ARE NOT APPROVED.

5. If necessary, dress weld flash in area of service bracket mounting (Step7). 6. Follow manufacturer's recommendations for painting repaired areas to restore corrosion protection. Also add corrosion protection to inside of rail using GM anti-rust compound 1052916 or equivalent. 7. Install service bracket kit per instructions.

8. Install wheel.
