NIPPONDENSO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR 1988 INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS SERVICED BY NIPPONDENSO

MODELS AFFECTED 6000, 6000 STE, FIREBIRD, GRAND AM, --------------- AND COMPASS MODULE FOR GRAND PRIX

Pontiac is pleased to announce the availability of an instrument cluster exchange program through Nippondenso for the above vehicles. The success of the Nippondenso cluster exchange program is dependent upon the prompt return of inoperative clusters to the Nippondenso Service Center. Your cooperation is essential to maintain sufficient quantities of exchange stock. Information required for the exchange cluster: (warranty and nonwarranty)

Please adhere to the following procedure when a vehicle requires dealer services:

1. Follow diagnostic procedure in the service manual precisely and completely. Proper diagnostics will identify the source of the problem and avoid unnecessary removal and shipping of functional assemblies to the service center. Call Nippondenso's toll free 800 number if assistance is desired.

2. When diagnostics are complete, and the fault is determined to be in the cluster, call Nippondenso's service center and request the appropriate unit.

3. After the exchange unit is received from the service center, remove the defective unit from the vehicle. Use caution when installing the new unit, hands should be free from dirt an grease.

4. Pack the inoperative components previously removed from the vehicle in the reusable shipping container, and enclose the completed information form. Also, enclosed in the reusable container is an addressed shipping label. Attach this label to the outside of the box and ship prepaid to Nippondenso Sales, Inc.

NOTICE: Be sure to include a description of the cluster malfunction to assist the service center in isolating the cause.

5. The dealer will be billed by Nippondenso for the exchange charge and shipping, regardless of warrant or non-warranty. The dealer should pay Nippondenso immediately and then charge the owner or Pontiac accordingly. the, sales invoice will be included with the replacement cluster. The core charge on the sales invoice will be canceled upon return of the defective part within 30 days. FAILURE to return the part within 30 days, or FAILURE to return the part in the reusable container provided will result in the dealer being billed for the core charge by Nippondenso.

6000 AND 6000 STE (Warranty and Non-warranty)

All 1984 6000 STE and all 1985-88 6000 series instrument clusters are serviced only by Nippondenso Sales, Inc.

The electronic display clusters are serviced through Nippondenso by whole cluster exchange only. DO NOT attempt any internal repairs on these electronic clusters.

For quartz clusters, ONLY the speedometer and odometer are exchanged through Nippondenso. All other replacement parts (except the DIC processor (SPECMO)) should be obtained through GMSPO.

FIREBIRD (Warranty and Non-warranty)

Base Telltale and Gauge Package Clusters:

All instrument cluster components except the speedometer, and tachometer will continue to be serviced by the dealer. The 1988 replacement speedometers and tachometers must be serviced by Nippondenso Sales, Inc.

NOTICE: The Firebird digital cluster is serviced only through the AC Delco service centers.

GRAND AM (Warranty And Non-warranty)

Base Telltale and Gauge Package:

The cluster assembly is serviced by a whole exchange unit only. No repairs should be attempted on these clusters except bulbs.

NOTICE: On the base cluster, the mileage on the mechanical odometer must be set by Nippondenso. On the gauge clusters, the odometer chip should be removed from the inoperative unit by the dealership, and installed in the replacement cluster.

Gauge clusters purchased from GMSPO can be supplied with an odometer chip from Nippondenso for a charge of $20.

GRAND PRIX COMPASS MODULE

The compass module for the Grand Prix is also on an exchange program with Nippondenso for 1988. The above procedure should be followed in exchanging a compass. See bulletin 88-8-2 for calibration procedures. Note that the instrument cluster for the Grand Prix is serviced through the AC Delco service centers.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

Replaced parts are to be shipped postage paid via regular UPS delivery along with the Nippondenso repair order form. A copy of this form must be attached to the warranty repair order.

Warranty claims should be submitted to Pontiac via warranty document or terminal transmission as follows:

When submitting a warranty claim, the appropriate labor operation should be used along with the price, handling, and shipping charges appearing in the net items column. If replacement parts are exchanged through Nippondenso, or obtained through GMSPO, regular warranty claim submission is requested.
