LABEL AND VIN PLATE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES

The following information will explain how to and when to acquire replacement labels for Pontiac vehicles.

- Labels must be in place when the vehicle is delivered to the first retail customer.

- There is no requirement to replace these labels after the retail delivery of a vehicle.

- As a courtesy to customers, a letter will be generated with the information that appeared on the original label for 1988 and forward models.

- Requests by owners for label information will be handled through the Customer Assistance Center, (1-800-762-2737).

- Dealership requests will be handled through the Dealer Assistance Center, (1-800-447-2287).

PRICE AND FUEL ECONOMY LABEL

- There is no requirement to replace this label after the vehicle is delivered to the first retail customer.

- Requests for replacement labels should be made through your zone office.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION PLATE (VIN)

WRONG VIN

UNSOLD - Replace with a plate containing the correct VIN and assure correct VIN also appears on the "Cert" label, anti-theft labels (if applicable), service parts identification label, price label, manufacturers certificate of origin and any other documentation on which the VIN appears. Also assure that derivative VIN on transmission and engine is correct.

SOLD - Compare the VIN on the plate with the other VINs on the vehicle and its documentation including the current title and registration. If all VINs are consistent even though wrong do not replace but rather generate an owner letter and notify the National Automobile Theft Bureau, National Systems Divisions, 1033 South Roberts Rd., 3A Palos Hills, IL 60465 Attn: Rolland Smith, Manager. If the vehicle has been registered incorrectly, the VIN has been recorded in many places over which GM has no control. If the vehicle has been registered under the correct VIN, the VIN plate should be changed to reflect the correct number.

DAMAGED VIN PLATE

UNSOLD - Replace

SOLD - Replace if permitted by state law after the applicable zone verifies the identity.

MISSING VIN PLATE

UNSOLD - Install a VIN plate containing the correct number.

SOLD - If the condition results from a theft and subsequent recovery of the vehicle, law enforcement should establish the identity of the vehicle and, if state law permits, a duplicate VIN plate should be prepared and installed.

WHENEVER A VIN PLATE IS REPLACED:

- Vehicle's identity must be documented

- Zone Rep and a law enforcement officer must witness the installation of the replacement VIN plate and disposition of VIN plate being removed.

- Zone must verify need and supply written documentation to support the request.

- All requests for replacement plates must be made through your zone office. - Use new Rosette head rivets to attach the VIN plate.

- Return replaced VIN plate (if available) to Pontiac Accounting Department for documented destruction.

- An accurate and legible emission label is required on all vehicles.

- Emission labels are available through G.M.S.P.O. They are listed in the "standard parts" book.

The ordering dealer is responsible for the proper information and application of the label.

ANTI-THEFT LABELS

- Anti-Theft labels cannot be replaced after the vehicle leaves the plant of origin.

- Replacement panels from G.M.S.P.O. have labels identifying them as service replacements, where applicable.

SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION LABEL (SPID)

- Service parts identification labels (SPID) will be available for 1988 model and forward.

- Customer requests will be handled through the Customer Assistance Center, (1-800-762-2737).

- Dealership request will be handled through the Dealer Assistance Center, (1-800-447-2287).

OTHER LABELS

Any other labels required should be ordered from G.M.S.P.O. using the label section of the standard parts book. If no part number is available, the order should be submitted on an NPN order giving description.
