CAMPAIGN: REPLACE COIL HIGH OUTPUT IGNITION

MODEL AND YEAR: 1984 PONTIAC FIREBIRD WITH 5.0L L69 V8 ENGINE 1985 PONTIAC FIREBIRD WITH 5.0L L69 V8 ENGINE OR 5.0L LB9 TPI V8 ENGINE

TO: ALL PONTIAC DEALERS

*This Bulletin Is Being Revised To Supersede Campaign Bulletin 85-C-10 Dated August, 1986. Upon Receipt Of This Reissued Bulletin 85-C-10A, Destroy 85-C-10.

General Motors has determined certain 1984 Pontiac Firebirds with 5.0L L69 V8 engine and 1985 Pontiac Firebirds with 5.0L L69 V8 engine or 5.0L LB9 TPI V8 engine may exhibit declining ignition voltage of the high output ignition coil.

High ignition coil temperatures combined with the stress of higher voltage may break down the epoxy coating of the high output ignition coil secondary windings. Declining ignition voltage may lead to engine misfire, hesitation, sags or no re-start. Correction will consist of replacing the high output ignition coil and module, revising spark plug gap and installing a spark plug gap revision label.

Dear Pontiac Owner:

General Motors has determined some 1984-85 Pontiac Firebird models with 5.0L engines may exhibit declining ignition voltage of the high output ignition coil.

High ignition coil temperatures combined with the stress of higher voltage may break down the epoxy coating of the high output ignition coil secondary windings. Declining ignition voltage may lead to engine misfire, hesitation sags or no restart.

To correct this condition on your vehicle your dealer will replace the high output ignition coil and module. In addition, your dealer will revise the spark plug gap and install a spark plug gap revision label. These repairs will be performed at no charge to you.

If you have already encountered this condition and paid for all or part of the repair, you should contact your Pontiac Dealer. When requesting reimbursement, you should present the dealer with your original paid receipt, verifying expenses incurred for such repair.

Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. The labor time to perform this service is approximately one and one half (1 1/2) hours. Please allow additional time for your dealer to process your vehicle.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid Owner Identification Reply Card and returning it to us so that we may update our records.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
