REAR MAIN BEARING CAP GROOVE ELIMINATION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: All 1984 Vehicles Equipped With 2.5L Engines (VIN Codes R and 2)

The groove in the rear main bearing cap, which was used to retain the oil pan gasket seal in prior years, has been eliminated.

This change shuuld have no effect on Service procedures other than a reduction in the amount of sealant required for oil pan installation.

Past model service engine blocks, 1982 and prior years, will have the groove and may be serviced using released gaskets. Gaskets can not be used on engines without the bearing cap groove.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
