BLOWN CHOKE FUSE HOOD LOUVER SOLENOID SHORT

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-84 Pontiac Trans-AM

Some comments have been received of the hood louver solenoid shorting out and in turn causing the choke fuse to blow. This may be caused by a malfunctioning vacuum switch. It is recommended that the hood vacuum switch be replaced at the same time as the hood solenoid.

The hood vacuum switch is located on a bracket on the left side of the cowl. On vehicles equipped with a Canadian calibrated LG4 engine and automatic transmission there is an additional vacuum switch located on the left side of this bracket. This switch controls the torque converter clutch (TCC) and receives its vacuum from the fuel vapor cannister, while the hood louver switch located on the right side of the bracket, receives its vacuum feed from the intake manifold. Care should be taken to ensure proper electrical and vacuum connections to these switches.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
