GEAR CLASH REPLACE SYNCHRONIZER SPRINGS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1983-84 'F' Car With 5-Speed Manual Transmission

Some 1983-84 'F' cars equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission may exhibit light gear clash during aggressive shifting maneuvers. This condition can be recognized by a slight crunch or click noise from the transmission as the next required gear is engaged, the duration of this noise will be very short, less than one (1) second, with the condition described. The condition primarily occurs. during 1-2 upshifts and 3-2 downshifts. To repair this condition, the transmission will require disassembly and replacement of all synchronizer springs with new P/N 14085893. In addition, the clutching teeth of each respective speed gear, synchronizer sleeve and blocker ring should be examined for excessive wear or damage and replaced as necessary. The procedures to be followed for this repair are detailed in the appropriate section of the service manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
