PINION FLANGE OIL LEAK BORG WARNER AXLES

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985 Firebirds Equipped With Borg-Warner Axles -----------------------------------------------

Borg-Warner axle assemblies have an anti-corrosion agent applied to the pinion end and yoke assembly before shipment.

When the vehicle is driven and the axle is brought to operating temperatures, this agent may run slightly and may also combine with the paint on the axle.

The residue then may spin off and deposit on the torque arm and underbody, and could be mistaken for a pinion seal leak.

If this condition is noticed, wipe off residue, verify that it is the above condition and advise the owner.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
