1985-86 FIREBIRD MODELS WITH 5.OL MPFI V-8 ENGINE (ENGINE CODE F) BUILT AT VAN NUYS (VIN CODE L) ONLY
ENGINE MAY NOT START, MAY RUN ROUGH OR MAY MISFIRE INTERMITTENTLY.
THE ELECTRONIC SPARK TIMING (EST) WIRING TO THE DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE MAKING CONTACT WITH THE ENGINE LIFT HOOK AT THE REAR OF THE RIGHT HAND CYLINDER HEAD (NEAR THE DISTRIBUTOR). EITHER THE ENGINE HARNESS OR THE EST HARNESS ON THE DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE AFFECTED.
1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
2. LOCATE AND REPAIR ANY WIRES WITH INSULATION RUBBED THROUGH.
3. ADD CONDUIT COVER TO WIRE HARNESSES AS NECESSARY TO PROTECT WIRES. IN SOME CASES, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO SECURE HARNESS WITH TIE STRAPS TO AVOID CONTACT WITH THE ENGINE LIFT HOOK.
4. RECONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
USE EXISTING LABOR OPERATIONS FOR WIRE HARNESS REPAIR.
