Water Pump Replacement 3.8L V6

Removal Procedure

  1. Open the radiator drain cock. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator to a level below the thermostat.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the radiator drain cock to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.

  6. Remove the radiator inlet hose from the water pump.

  7. Object Number: 221711  Size: SH
  8. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump pulley.

  10. Object Number: 11687  Size: SH
  11. Remove the water pump bolts (1).
  12. Remove the water pump (2).
  13. Remove the water pump gasket (3).
  14. Clean all of the gasket mating surfaces, including the water pump bolts.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter


    Object Number: 11687  Size: SH
  1. Install a new water pump gasket (3).
  2. Install the water pump (2).
  3. Install the water pump bolts (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts (1) to 15 N·m (11 lb ft ) plus an additional 80 degrees using the J 36660-A .

  5. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the water pump.

  6. Object Number: 221711  Size: SH
  7. Install the water pump pulley.
  8. Install the water pump pulley bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  10. Install the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
  11. Add the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  12. Start the engine. After the engine reaches normal operating temperature, check for coolant leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 5.7L V8

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Disconnect the coolant fan electrical connectors from the fans.
  3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Lower the vehicle.

  6. Disconnect the (IAT) intake air temperature sensor and (MAF) mass airflow sensor electrical connectors.

  7. Object Number: 208569  Size: SH
  8. Remove the air intake duct.

  9. Object Number: 221671  Size: SH
  10. Remove the outlet hose from the water outlet.

  11. Object Number: 221676  Size: SH
  12. Remove the inlet hose from the coolant pump.

  13. Object Number: 221697  Size: SH
  14. Remove the air cleaner assembly bolts.
  15. Remove the air cleaner assembly / upper radiator support.

  16. Object Number: 349797  Size: SH
  17. Remove the inlet hose (1) from the radiator.

  18. Object Number: 41692  Size: SH
  19. Remove the electric engine coolant fans.
  20. Remove the air conditioning drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-5.7L.

  22. Remove the drive belt tensioner pulley from the coolant pump.
  23. Remove the vent hose from the radiator.

  24. Object Number: 74081  Size: SH
  25. Remove the coolant pump pulley bolts.
  26. Remove the coolant pump pulley.

  27. Object Number: 221712  Size: SH
  28. Remove the coolant pump bolts.

  29. Object Number: 221714  Size: SH
  30. Remove the coolant pump.
  31. Clean all gasket mating surfaces, including the water pump bolts.
  32. Transfer the thermostat from the old water pump to the new pump.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 221714  Size: SH
  1. Install the coolant pump to the engine block.

  2. Object Number: 221712  Size: SH
  3. Install the coolant pump bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the coolant pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 74081  Size: SH
  5. Install the coolant pump pulley.
  6. Install the coolant pump pulley bolts.
  7. Tighten

        • Tighten the coolant pump pulley bolts the first pass evenly to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the coolant pump pulley bolts the final pass to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
  8. Install the vent hose to the radiator.

  9. Object Number: 220581  Size: SH
  10. Install the drive belt tensioner to the coolant pump.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt tensioner bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  12. Install the drive belts. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-5.7L.

  14. Install the electric engine cooling fans.

  15. Object Number: 349797  Size: SH
  16. Install the inlet hose (1) to the radiator.

  17. Object Number: 221697  Size: SH
  18. Install the air cleaner assembly / upper radiator support.
  19. Install the air cleaner assembly bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the air cleaner bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  21. Install the inlet hose to the coolant pump.

  22. Object Number: 221671  Size: SH
  23. Install the outlet hose to the water outlet.

  24. Object Number: 208569  Size: SH
  25. Install the air intake duct.

  26. Object Number: 208553  Size: SH
  27. Connect the IAT sensor and the MAF sensor electrical connectors.

  28. Object Number: 221692  Size: SH
  29. Connect the coolant fan electrical connectors to the fan assemblies.
  30. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
