Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 23578  Size: SH
  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission oil pan.
  3. Remove the oil pan bolts from the front and sides only.
  4. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts approximately 4 turns.
  5. Lightly tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry gently in order to allow the fluid to drain.

  7. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts.

  9. Remove the oil pan and the gasket.

  10. Object Number: 13958  Size: SH
  11. Remove the fluid filter and the seal. The seal may stick in the transmission case.
  12. Inspect the fluid color.
  13. Inspect the filter. Pry the metal crimping away from the top of the filter and pull apart. The filter may contain the following evidence for root cause diagnosis:
  14. • Clutch material
    • Bronze slivers indicating bushing wear
    • Steel particles
  15. Clean the transmission case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent, and air dry. You must remove all traces of the old gasket material.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 36850 Transmission Assembly Lube

  1. Coat the new filter neck seal with a small amount of J 36850 , or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 13958  Size: SH
  3. Install the new filter neck seal into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place using a suitable size socket.
  4. Install the new filter into the case.

  5. Object Number: 13955  Size: SH
  6. Install the oil pan and a new gasket.
  7. Notice: Do not reuse automatic transmission bolts and washers if the conical washer is reversed. Failure to replace the oil pan bolts and washers may result in improper fastening of the system components.

  8. Install the oil pan bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Alternately, and evenly, tighten the oil pan bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Notice: Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling will result in foaming, loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transmission.

  12. Fill the transmission to the proper level. Use DEXRON® III, or if unavailable, DEXRON® IIE.
  13. Check the COLD fluid level reading for initial fill only. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
  14. Inspect the oil pan gasket for leaks.
