Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
    • J 22813-A Axle Bearing Remover
  1. Remove the rear axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement .
  2. If the vehicle has a rear brake backing plate, remove the rear brake backing plate.
  3. if the vehicle has a rear brake caliper anchor bracket and mounting plate, remove the rear brake caliper anchor bracket and mounting plate.
  4. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  5. Place a pry bar behind the steel case of the seal (3).
  6. Use the pry bar in order to remove the rear wheel bearing seal (3) from the rear axle housing (2).

    Do not damage the housing (2).

  7. Insert the J 22813-A into the bore.
  8. Position the J 22813-A behind the rear wheel bearing so that the tangs on the tool engage the bearing outer race.

  9. Use the J 2619-01 in order to remove the rear wheel bearing.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 8092 Driver Handle
    • J 23765 Axle Bearing Installer
    • J 23771 Axle Oil Seal Installer

  1. Lubricate the new rear wheel bearing (1).
  2. Use one of the following lubricants:

    • Axle lubricant
    • SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant or an equivalent
  3. Use the J 23765 and the J 8092 in order to install the rear wheel bearing.
  4. Ensure that the tool bottoms against the shoulder in the rear axle housing.

  5. Lubricate the sealing lips.
  6. Use one of the following lubricants:

    • Axle lubricant
    • SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant or an equivalent

  7. Position the rear wheel bearing seal onto the J 23771
  8. Use the J 23771 in order to direct the bearing seal (3) into the housing bore.
  9. Install the rear wheel bearing seal into place.
  10. Ensure that the rear wheel bearing seal is flush with the axle tube.

  11. Install the rear brake caliper mounting plate.
  12. Install the rear axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement
  13. Inspect for correct operation of the rear axle.
