Removal Procedure

J 39549 Ball Joint/Tie Rod Separator

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the special security wheel lock nut, if equipped. Use the special security wheel lock key, which is located in the front floor console.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Important: During removal and installation, the floor jack must remain under the shock absorber mounting location on the lower control arm in order to hold the spring and the lower control arm in position.

  5. Place a floor jack under the shock absorber mounting location on the lower control arm.
  6. Loosen the ball stud from the steering knuckle.
  7. Remove the cotter pin and the nut.
  8. Support the steering knuckle with floor stands.
  9. Use the J 39549 in order to separate the ball stud from the upper control arm.

  10. Object Number: 1832  Size: SH
  11. With the upper control arm in the raised position, drill out four rivets approximately 6 mm (0.25 in) deep using a 1/8 inch drill bit.

  12. Object Number: 1833  Size: SH
  13. Drill off the rivet heads using a ½ inch drill bit.

  14. Object Number: 1834  Size: SH
  15. Punch out the rivets using a small punch.
  16. Remove the ball stud.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 181076  Size: SH
  1. Position the new ball stud and install the 4 service kit bolts/screws and nuts. Refer to the specifications in the ball stud kit.
  2. Remove the temporary support from the steering knuckle. Connect the ball stud to the steering knuckle.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Using your fingers, install the nut enough in order to align the slot with the stud hole.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 53 N·m (39 lb ft).

  6. Install the cotter pin.
  7. Install the floor jack to the spring seat.
  8. Install the tire and the wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Install the special security wheel lock nut, if equipped. Use the special security wheel lock key, which is located in the front floor console.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
