Probable Cause

Action

The transmission fluid level is low.

Inspect the transmission fluid level and add the proper fluid as necessary.

Refer to Transmission Oil Drain and Fill .

The transmission contains the incorrect type of transmission fluid.

Drain the transmission fluid, the fill the transmission with the correct type of fluid.

Refer to Transmission Oil Drain and Fill .

The transmission shift control closeout boot is loose or damaged.

  1. Inspect the transmission shift control closeout boot.
  2. Position and tighten the closeout boot to specification, or replace the boot as necessary.
  3. Refer to Shift Control Shift Closeout Boot Replacement .

The transmission gear or bearing components are worn or damaged.

  1. Remove the transmission.
  2. Refer to Transmission Replacement .

  3. Disassemble and inspect the transmission.
  4. Replace worn or damaged components as necessary.
  5. Refer to Transmission/Transaxle/Transfer Case Unit Repair Manual.

  6. Install the transmission.
  7. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
