Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.

  4. Object Number: 12302 Size: SH
  5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) shield (1). DO NOT use a pry bar.
  6. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  7. Remove the 2 attaching bolts from the CKP sensor.

  8. Object Number: 12303 Size: SH
  9. Remove the CKP sensor from block face.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 12303 Size: SH
  1. Position the CKP sensor to the block.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolts that hold the CKP sensor to the block face.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

    Object Number: 12302 Size: SH
  5. Install the CKP sensor shield (1).
  6. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
  7. Position the crankshaft harmonic balancer on the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
  8. Replace the right inner fender access cover.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Perform the Crankshaft Variation Learn Procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn .
