Wheel Stud Replacement Vehicles WithoutWheel Hubs
Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the brake drum/hub
assembly (6).
- Remove the spindle nut dust cap (11). Pry off the cap using
a flat-bladed tool.
- Unstake and remove the spindle nut (10) and the washer (9).
- Gently tap on the brake drum/hub assembly using a hammer in order
to break the assembly loose. Remove the assembly from the spindle.
- Remove the wheel stud (3)
from the brake drum/hub using a rod (2) and a hydraulic press (1).
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use care to align splines on stud and brake drum/hub.
- Install the wheel stud (3) to the brake drum/hub assembly using
a rod (2) and a hydraulic press (1).
- Install the brake drum/hub assembly to the knuckle spindle.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the washer
and the spindle nut to the knuckle spindle.
Tighten
Tighten the spindle nut to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).
- Stake the spindle nut.
- Install the spindle nut dust cap.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure
Special Tool
J 6627-A Stud Remover
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the two recessed screws and the brake drum.
- Install the wheel nuts onto the studs.
- Use a pry bar between two studs in order to prevent the hub from
turning.
- Remove the wheel stud
using J 6627-A
.
- Remove the wheel nut from the wheel stud.
Installation Procedure
- Use a pry bar between two studs in order to prevent the hub from
turning.
- Install washers onto the
wheel stud. Pull the wheel stud into position with a wheel nut.
- Remove the wheel nut and the washers.
- Install the brake drum. Secure the brake drum with the two recessed
screws.
- Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
