Identify the condition and probable cause before attempting to repair the following components for any reason other than mechanical failure:

    • The clutch
    • The transaxle
    • Related linkages

The following shifting conditions reveal clutch and manual transaxle failures:

    • Excessive shifting effort
    • Gear clash
    • Gear grinding

If any of the above conditions exist, perform the following inspection and adjustment procedures before disassembling the clutch and/or transaxle for repairs:

    • Allow the engine to run at a normal idle under the following conditions:
       - The transaxle is in the NEUTRAL position.
       - The clutch is engaged.
    • Depress the clutch pedal in order to disengage the clutch.
    • Wait approximately nine seconds.
    • Shift the transaxle into the REVERSE position.
    • Inspect the clutch for engagement if a grinding noise exists.
