Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 34839 Pinion Bearing Remover
    • J 37764 Slide Hammer Adapter
    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
  1. Slide the boot on the speedometer cable.
  2. Slide the boot off the speedometer driven gear case.

  3. Object Number: 179982  Size: MH
  4. Remove the following components from the speedometer driven gear case (2):
  5. • The speedometer cable retaining clip (7)
    • The speedometer cable
  6. Remove the following components from the transaxle:
  7. 4.1. The retaining bolt (1)
    4.2. The speedometer driven gear case (2)
  8. Use a standard drift punch in order to remove the roll pin (6) from the speedometer driven gear case (2).
  9. Remove the speedometer driven gear (5) from the speedometer driven gear case (2).
  10. Remove the O-ring (4) from the speedometer driven gear case (2).

  11. Object Number: 179984  Size: SH
  12. Use the following tools in order to remove the lip seal from the inside of the speedometer driven gear case (1):
  13. 8.1. J 34839
    8.2. J 37764
    8.3. J 23907
  14. Inspect the speedometer driven gear for excessive damage.
  15. Inspect the O-ring damage.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 34857 Gearshift Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 36850 Transmission Assembly Lubricant
  1. Apply some J 36850 to the new lip seal.

  2. Object Number: 179986  Size: SH
  3. Use the J 34857 in order to install the new lip seal (2) into the speedometer driven gear case (1).

  4. Object Number: 179982  Size: MH
  5. Install the O-ring (4) onto the speedometer driven gear case (2).
  6. Apply J 36850 some to the O-ring (4).
  7. Install the speedometer driven gear (5) into the speedometer driven gear case (2).
  8. Use a standard drift punch in order to install the roll pin (6) into the speedometer driven gear (5).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the speedometer driven gear case into the transaxle.
  11. Install the bolt that retains the speedometer driven gear case (1).

    Tighten
    Tighten the retaining bolt (2) to 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  12. Install the speedometer cable into the speedometer driven gear case.
  13. Use the speedometer cable retaining clip in order to secure the speedometer cable.

  14. Slide the boot down the speedometer cable.
  15. Slide the boot over the speedometer driven gear case.
