Wheel Hub Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 34866 Wheel Hub Remover
    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
    • J 22912-B Bearing Puller
    • J 38424 Hub Race Puller Pilot
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  5. Unstake the washer for the drive axle.
  6. Remove the nut and the washer from the drive axle.
  7. Use 2 wheel nuts (1), the J 34866 , and the J 2619-01 in order to remove the hub and the outer bearing race from the knuckle.

  8. Object Number: 175934  Size: SH
  9. If necessary, remove the outer bearing race from the hub. Use the J 22912-B , the J 38424 , and a press.

Wheel Hub Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 36050 Wheel Hub Race Installer

  1. Apply a light coat of lubricant to the outside of the hub shaft. Use GM Wheel Bearing Grease, GM P/N 1051344, or the equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 175944  Size: SH
  3. If necessary, install the outer bearing race (1) to the hub (2). Use the J 36050 and a press.

  4. Object Number: 175903  Size: MH
  5. Use the following procedure in order to install the hub and the outer bearing race to the knuckle:
  6. 3.1. Place a block of wood on the end of the hub in order to absorb the shock from a hammer.
    3.2. Use a hammer in order to tap the hub and the outer bearing race into the knuckle.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the washer and the nut to the drive axle.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 175 N·m (129 lb ft).

  9. Stake the washer in order to secure the nut.
  10. Install the brake rotor, the caliper carrier, and the caliper. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly (11). Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.

Wheel Bearing Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 26941 Drive Sprocket Support Bearing Cup
    • J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
    • J 41392 Front Hub Support /Inner Seal Installer
    • J 7079-2 Non-Threaded Driver Handle
    • J 41391 Tie Rod End Remover
    • J 22912-B Bearing Puller
    • J 38424 Hub Race Puller Pilot
  1. Remove the knuckle from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 175933  Size: SH
  3. Remove the inner bearing oil seal and the outer bearing oil seal from the knuckle (1). Use the J 26941 and the J 2619-01 .
  4. Remove the inner race and the bearing from the knuckle.
  5. Remove the snap ring from the outboard side of the knuckle.
  6. Remove the outer bearing from the knuckle.

  8. Remove the outer bearing race from the hub. Use the J 22912-B , the J 38424 , and a press.

  9. Object Number: 175941  Size: SH
  10. Use the J 41392 in order to support the knuckle. .
  11. Remove the bearing from the knuckle. Use the J 7079-2 and the J 41391 .
  12. Inspect the inner oil seal and the outer bearing oil seal for the following conditions:
  13. • Wear
    • Damage
    • Deterioration
    • Failure
  14. If any of these conditions exist, replace the seals.
  15. Inspect the bearings for the following conditions:
  16. • Wear
    • Corrosion
    • Contamination from water
    • Contamination from dirt
  17. If any of these conditions exist, replace the bearing.

Wheel Bearing Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 39722 Wheel Bearing Race/Outer Seal Installer
    • J 7079-2 Driver Handle
    • J 41392 Front Hub Support/Inner Seal Installer
    • J 36050 Wheel Hub Race Installer

    Object Number: 175942  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 41392 in order to support the knuckle.
  2. Install the outer bearing to the knuckle (1). Use the J 39722 and the J 7079-2 .
  3. Install the snap ring to the outboard side of the knuckle.
  4. Install the inner bearing and the race to the knuckle.

  5. Object Number: 175944  Size: SH
  6. Install the outer bearing race (1) to the wheel hub (2). Use the J 36050 and a press.
  7. Apply a lubricant to the lip of the inner oil seal. Use GM Wheel Bearing Grease, GM P/N 1051344, or the equivalent.
  8. If the vehicle has ABS, align the hole in the seal with the hole in the knuckle for the wheel speed sensor.

  9. Object Number: 175946  Size: SH
  10. Install the inner oil seal (1) to the inboard side of the knuckle. Use the J 41392 and the J 7079-2 .

  11. Object Number: 175947  Size: SH
  12. Install the outer oil seal (1) to the outboard side of the knuckle. Use the J 39722 and the J 7079-2 .
  13. Install the knuckle to the vehicle. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement .
