Explanation of Scheduled Services Europe

Normal Vehicle Use

The maintenance instructions contained in the maintenance schedule are based on the assumption that the vehicle will be used for the following reasons:

    • To carry passengers and cargo within the limitation indicated on the tire placard.
    • To be driven on reasonable road surfaces and within legal operating limits.

Explanation of Scheduled Maintenance Services

The services listed in the maintenance schedule are further explained below. When the following maintenance services are performed, replace all of the necessary parts and complete all of the necessary repairs before driving the vehicle. Always use the proper fluids and lubricants.

Drive Belt Inspection

If a separate belt drives the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor and the generator, inspect the belt for cracks, fraying, wear and proper tension. Adjust or replace the belt as necessary.

Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change

Classifications of Engine Oil

The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) and American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies engine oils according to their performance quality.

Engine Oil Viscosity

Caution: Using engine oils of any viscosity other than those viscosities recommended could result in engine damage.

Engine oil viscosity, or thickness, has an effect on fuel economy and cold weather operation. Lower viscosity engine oils can provide better fuel economy and cold weather performance; however, higher temperature weather conditions require higher viscosity engine oils for satisfactory lubrication.

Cooling System Service

Drain, flush and refill the system with new coolant.

Engine Fuel Filter Replacement

For the 1.2L DOHC engine, replace the fuel filter every 45 000 km (30,000 mi).

For the 1.4L DOHC engine, replace the fuel filter every 45 000 km (30,000 mi).

The 1.4 L DOHC engine fuel filter is located on the center dash panel near the brake booster.

Air Cleaner Element Replacement

Replace the air cleaner element every 45 000 km (30,000 mi).

Replace the air cleaner more often under dusty conditions.

Throttle Body Retaining Nuts and Bolts

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

Tighten the throttle body retaining nuts.

Tighten

    • For the 1.2L DOHC engine, tighten the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts to 10.5 N·m (92.9 lb in).
    • For the 1.4L engine, tighten the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
    • For the 1.5L engine, tighten the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
    • For the 1.6L engine, tighten the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

Spark Plug Replacement

Replace spark plugs with the same type.

Spark Plug Wire Replacement

Clean wires and inspect them for burns, cracks or other damage. Check the wire boot fit at the DIS module and at the spark plugs. Replace the wires as necessary.

Brake System Service

Inspect the disc brake pads and the drum brake linings every 15 000 km (10,000 mi) or 12 months. Inspect the pad and the lining thickness carefully. If the pads or the linings are not expected to last to the next scheduled maintenance service, replace the pads or the linings. Inspect the breather hole in the brake fluid reservoir cap to be sure it is free from dirt and the passage is open.

Transaxle Service

For the 1.2L DOHC engine, replace the manual transaxle fluid at 15 000 km (10,000 mi) or 12 months, and every 30 000 km (20,000 mi) or every 24 months thereafter. Inspect the manual transaxle fluid every 30 000 km (20,000 mi) or every 24 months.

For engines larger than 1.2L, the manual transaxle fluid does not require changing. Inspect the manual transaxle fluid every 15 000 km (10,000 mi) or every 12 months.

For automatic transaxles, inspect the automatic transaxle fluid every 15 000 km (10,000 mi) or every 12 months.

Tire and Wheel Inspection and Rotation

Check the tires for abnormal wear or damage. To equalize wear and obtain maximum tire life, rotate the tires. If irregular or premature wear exists, check the wheel alignment and check for damaged wheels. While the tires and wheels are removed, inspect the brakes.
