Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement Without RPO LNF

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 890738 Size: SH

Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  1. Remove the brake caliper from the brake caliper mounting bracket and support the brake caliper with heavy mechanics wire (2) or equivalent. Do NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Replacement.
  2. Remove the brake pads (1) from the brake caliper bracket.

  3. Object Number: 1385621 Size: SH
  4. Remove the disc brake pad retainers (6) from the brake caliper bracket.
  5. Thoroughly clean the brake pad hardware mating surfaces of the caliper bracket (3) of any debris and corrosion.
  6. Inspect the disc brake pad retainers (6) for the following:
  7. • Bent mounting tabs
    • Excessive corrosion
    • Looseness at the brake caliper mounting bracket
    • Looseness at the disc brake pads
  8. If any of the conditions listed are found, the disc brake pad retainers require replacement.
  9. Remove the brake caliper guide pins (1, 4) from the brake caliper bracket.
  10. Remove the caliper guide pin boots (5) from the caliper bracket.
  11. Inspect the caliper guide pin bores in the caliper bracket. Carefully remove any debris or corrosion from the bores.
  12. Inspect the guide pin boots (5). If the boots are damaged, they require replacement.
  13. Inspect the guide pins (1, 4) and the bushing (2) on the upper guide pin. If either of the guide pin assemblies is damaged or corroded, or if the bushing is damaged, the guide pins require replacement.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1385621 Size: SH
  1. Apply a thin, light coating of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the inside of the brake caliper guide pin boots (5).
  2. Fully install the guide pin boots (5) to the brake caliper mounting bracket.
  3. Important: Ensure that there is not a build up of lubricant at the end of the upper guide pin, ahead of the bushing (2).

  4. Apply a light coating of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper guide pins (1, 4), including the bushing (2) on the upper guide pin. Apply very little lubricant to the end of the upper guide pin, ahead of the bushing (2).
  5. Install the brake caliper guide pins (1, 4) to the caliper mounting bracket. Ensure that the rim of the guide pin boots is fully seated in the groove on the guide pins.
  6. Apply a very thin coating of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the pad hardware mating surfaces of the caliper bracket (3) only.
  7. If reusing the brake pad retainers, clean the brake pad mating surfaces of the brake pad retainers (6).
  8. Install the brake pad retainers (6) to the brake caliper bracket.

  9. Object Number: 890738 Size: SH

Important: The wear sensor equipped disc brake pad must be mounted inboard of the rotor with the leading edge of the sensor facing the brake rotor during forward wheel rotation, or at the top of the pad when installed in vehicle position.

  10. Install the brake pads (1) to the brake caliper bracket.
  11. Remove the support (2) and reposition the brake caliper over the brake pads and to the mounting bracket. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Replacement.

Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement With RPO LNF

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  3. Object Number: 1349657 Size: SH
  4. Holding the lower end of the retainer (1) down and using a hammer and punch carefully tap the lower caliper guide pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
  5. Rotate the brake pad retainer upward and remove the brake pad retainer.

  6. Object Number: 1349658 Size: SH
  7. Using a hammer and punch carefully tap the upper caliper to brake pad mounting pin (2) inward out of the caliper.
  8. Remove and inspect the brake pads (1). Refer to Brake Pad Inspection.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1349658 Size: SH
  1. Install the brake pads (1) to the caliper.
  2. Install the upper caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
  3. Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin to the outer caliper half. Ensure the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat.

  4. Object Number: 1349657 Size: SH
  5. Install the brake pad retainer (1) under the upper caliper pin assembly.
  6. Rotate brake pad retainer downward.
  7. Hold the brake pad retainer down and install the lower caliper guide pin (2) through the caliper, inner and outer brake pads.
  8. Using a hammer and punch seat the upper guide pin to the outer caliper half. Ensure the caliper guide pin is seated into the outer caliper pin seat. Ensure the brake pad retainer is centered retaining both brake pads.
  9. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
