Description

A crankcase ventilation system is used to consume crankcase vapors in the combustion process, instead of venting them into the atmosphere. Fresh filtered air from the intake duct is supplied to the crankcase, mixed with blow-by gasses, and the passed through a calibrated orifice into the intake manifold.

DEFINITION: The following items are the result of incorrect operation:

A plugged or restricted ventilation system may cause the following conditions:

    • Oil consumption
    • Rough idle
    • Stalling or slow idle speed
    • Oil leaks
    • Oil accumulation in the air intake duct
    • Sludge in the engine

A leaking crankcase ventilation system may cause the following conditions:

    • Rough idle
    • Stalling
    • High idle speed

Does the vehicle exhibit any of the following conditions?

    • Oil consumption
    • Rough idle
    • Stalling or slow idle speed
    • Oil leaks
    • Oil accumulation in the air intake duct
    • Sludge in the engine
    • High idle speed

Inspect the crankcase ventilation system hoses for kinks and broken or disconnected fittings.

Did you find any kinked or damaged hoses?

Go to Step 3

  1. Relieve any kinks by rerouting the hoses.
  2. Replace the hoses, if necessary.

Did you correct the condition?

System OK

Check the metering orifice for blockage.

Is the orifice blocked?

Repair the blockage of the metering orifice.

Inspect the valve cover seals and oil pan gasket for leaks.
