DTC Descriptor

DTC 034: Wet Seat Fault

Circuit/System Description

The inflatable restraint Passenger Presence System (PPS) has several flexible conductive metal strips placed underneath the seat cushion trim. These sensor strips transmit and receive a low-level electric field. If the seat is saturated with liquid, the PPS will detect a low resistance value between these sensor strips. If this occurs, allow seat to dry, it may take up to 48 hours for the seat to completely dry. Check if fault returns. If the PPS determines there is a wet seat condition the PPS will communicate to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) through a non class 2 communications circuit that a PPS fault is present. When the PPS detects this DTC within the PPS it will notify the customer of the enable/disable status by turning on the OFF indicator on the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators, then the PPS will communicate to the SDM that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will then turn the AIR BAG indicator ON, and set DTC B0092 indicating a problem within the PPS and will suppress the deployment of the instrument panel (I/P) module. In some conditions DTC 056 will set along with DTC 034. The wet seat fault should be diagnosed first.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • Seat or seat trim/foam is saturated with liquid.
    • Low resistance values between sensor strips.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PPS will set a DTC 034, and then communicate with the SDM via non class 2 circuit.
    • The PPS will also set DTC 056 indicating a PPS internal system fault has occurred until the re-zeroing procedure was performed.
    • The SDM will set DTC B0092.
    • The SDM disables the I/P module deployment loop.
    • The PPS will turn ON the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
    • The SDM commands the AIR BAG indicator ON via serial data communications.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists and the scan tool Clear DTCs function is used.
    • A history DTC will clear once 255 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Diagnostic Aids

This fault indicates that the seat or seat trim/foam is saturated with liquid. If this DTC sets, verify the wet seat condition, let dry and see if fault returns. If DTC 056 is set along with DTC 034, diagnose the wet seat fault first.

Circuit/System Testing

Important: If DTC resets after rezeroing, it may be necessary to perform this rezeroing procedure several times.

  1. Remove the PPS and passenger seat bottom cushion assembly and allow it to air dry (approximately 48 hours).
  2. Reinstall the PPS and seat bottom cushion assembly.
  3. Ignition ON, use the scan tool to clear all SIR and PPS DTCs. Rezero the PPS, refer to Passenger Presence System Rezeroing.
  4. Verify that DTC 034 does not reset, refer to Passenger Presence System Flash Code Procedures.
  5. If DTC 034 resets, replace the PPS.
