GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement and Reprogramming

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced or reprogrammed, the following procedures must be performed:

  1. ECM reprogramming--Refer to Service Programming System (SPS).
  2. Heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor heater learn procedure using a scan tool for 6.0L.
  3. The Throttle Learn procedure--Refer to Throttle Learn for 3.6L or Throttle Learn for 6.0L.
  4. The crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure--Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn.
  5. Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  6. Theft Deterrent--Refer to Theft Deterrent Control Module Programming and Setup. The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle's fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle's password.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

    • If any of the following components are replaced, an Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Throttle Learn for 3.6L or Throttle Learn for 6.0L.
       - Throttle body assembly
       - ECM
    • If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for 6.0L.
       - CKP sensor
       - Engine replacement
       - Any engine repair that disturbs the relationship between CKP sensor and the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
