Starter Replacement 3.6L

Removal Procedure

    Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning in the Preface section.

    Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Ignition OFF.
  3. Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  4. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  5. Remove the right catalytic converter from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.

  7. Remove the starter motor heat shield to starter motor retaining screw (1).
  8. Detach the starter motor heat shield to starter motor retaining clip (2) from the starter motor (3).
  9. Remove the starter motor heat shield (4).

  11. Remove the starter motor to bell housing retaining bolts (2).
  12. Remove the starter motor (1) from the bell housing.

  14. Remove the engine wiring harness lead nut (1).
  15. Remove the engine wiring harness lead terminal (4) from the starter motor.
  16. Remove battery positive cable retaining nut (3) from the starter motor solenoid.
  17. Remove the battery positive cable (2) from the starter motor.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 2046386  Size: SH
  1. Install the engine wiring harness lead terminal (4) from the starter motor.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the engine wiring harness lead nut (1) and tighten to 4 N·m  (30 lb ft).
  4. Install the battery positive cable (2) from the starter motor.
  5. Install battery positive cable retaining nut (3) to the starter motor solenoid and tighten to 10 N·m (7 lb ft).
  6. Manoeuvre the starter motor into place, locating into the correct position on the bell housing.

  7. Object Number: 1949864  Size: SH
  8. Install the starter motor to bell housing (2) retaining bolts and tighten to 50 N·m  (37 lb ft).

  9. Object Number: 2046387  Size: SH

    Note: Make sure the heat shield to starter motor retaining clip (2) is correctly attached to the starter motor (3).

  10. Attach the heat shield (4) to the starter motor (3).
  11. Install the heat shield to starter motor retaining bolt (1) and tighten to 5 N·m  (44 lb in).
  12. Install the right catalytic converter to the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.
  13. Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  14. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  15. Remove the safety stands.
  16. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

Starter Replacement 6.0L

Removal Procedure

    Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  2. Warning: Refer to Safety Glasses Warning in the Preface section.

    Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  4. Remove the right catalytic converter from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.

  6. Remove the starter motor heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1).
  7. Remove the heat shield from the vehicle (2).

  8. Object Number: 2046249  Size: SH
  9. Remove the engine wiring harness lead nut (1).
  10. Remove the engine wiring harness lead terminal (4) from the starter motor.
  11. Remove battery positive cable retaining nut (2) from the starter motor solenoid.
  12. Remove the battery positive cable (3) from the starter motor.

  13. Object Number: 1954042  Size: SH
  14. Remove starter motor to engine block retaining bolts (1).
  15. Manoeuvre the starter motor (2) out and down between the transmission bell housing and body sub frame.

Installation Procedure

    Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 1954042  Size: SH
  3. Manoeuvre the starter motor (2) into position between the transmission bell housing and body sub frame.
  4. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  5. Install starter motor to bell housing retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 50 N·m  (37 lb ft).

  6. Object Number: 2046249  Size: SH
  7. Install the engine wiring harness lead terminal (4) from the starter motor.
  8. Install the engine wiring harness lead nut (1) and tighten to 4 N·m  (30 lb ft).
  9. Install the battery positive cable (3) from the starter motor.
  10. Install battery positive cable retaining nut (2) from the starter motor solenoid.
  11. Install battery positive cable retaining nut (1) to the starter motor battery positive terminal and tighten to 10 N·m  (7 lb ft).

  12. Object Number: 1951065  Size: SH
  13. Install the heat shield to the vehicle (2).
  14. Install the heat shield to starter motor retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 5 N·m  (44 lb in).
  15. Install the right catalytic converter to the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement - Right Side.
  16. Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.

  17. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
  18. Remove the safety stands.
  19. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
