    Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

    Note: This procedure references the left front wheel. Brake pad inspection for the other wheels are similar.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  3. Remove the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  5. Install 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), with the flat side of the wheel nut against the brake rotor to retain the brake rotor to the wheel hub.

  7. Carry out a visual inspection of the brake pads.
  8. • Inspect the brake pad shims.
    • Inspect the thickness of the brake pad friction surfaces (1).
  9. If the brake pads appears worn or further inspection is required, remove the brake pads. Refer to:
  10. •  Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement.
    •  Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement.

  11. Using a vernier caliper gauge measure the thickness of the outer brake pad between the friction surface and the backing plate (1).
  12. Using a vernier caliper gauge measure the thickness of the inner brake pad between the friction surface and the backing plate (1).
  13. Replace the brake pads if:
  14. • Either of the brake pad measurement is 3.0 mm or less.
    • If there is more than 2.0 mm variation between the inner and outer brake pad reading.
    • If there is more than 2.0 mm difference between the leading and trailing edge of the same brake pad.
    • If the brake pads friction surfaces has, cracks, fractures, or damage.
  15. Verify that the brake pad shims are not damaged or corroded and firmly attached to the brake pads.
  16. Replace damaged or corroded brake pad shims.
  17. Install the brake pads. Refer to:
  18. •  Front Disc Brake Pads Replacement.
    •  Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement.

  19. Remove the 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), from the wheel studs.
  20. Install the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  21. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
