Circuit Description

The pump motor relay is part of the electronic brake control module (EBCM). The EBCM turns ON and OFF the pump motor relay as deemed necessary in order to activate the pump motor. The pump motor modulates brake hydraulic pressure.

Conditions for Running the DTC

DTC 61 can be set anytime the ignition switch is in the ON position.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The EBCM detects an open or short in the pump motor circuitry.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The ABS and traction control system are disabled.
    • The ABS and TRAC OFF warning indicators turn ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists and the scan tool Clear DTCs function is used.

Diagnostic Aids

Thoroughly inspect the wiring and the connectors. An incomplete inspection of the wiring and the connectors may result in a misdiagnosis, causing a part replacement with the reappearance of the malfunction.

The following are possible causes of the malfunction:

    • A short to ground in the battery positive voltage circuit
    • An internal EBCM malfunction

If an intermittent malfunction exists, refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

The numbers below refer to step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step tests the EBCM ground circuits.

  2. This step tests the EBCM battery positive voltage circuits.

  3. This step tests the EBCM ignition positive voltage circuit.

Is DTC 61 the only DTC set?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Using the scan tool, perform the Auto Test in the Special Functions menu.

Does the pump motor run for approximately 1-2 seconds?

Inspect for poor connections at the pump motor connector of the electronic brake control module (EBCM). Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the EBCM harness connector.
  3. Measure the voltage between the battery positive voltage circuits of the EBCM and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the voltage for both circuits measure as specified?

Approximately 12 V

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Measure the voltage between the ignition positive voltage circuit of the EBCM and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Does the voltage measure as specified?

Approximately 12 V

Test the EBCM ground circuits for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the battery positive voltage circuits for an open, high resistance or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) assembly. Refer to Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Replacement .

  1. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
  2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
