J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gage

  1. Tilt the steering column to the highest position.
  2. Telescope the steering column to the farthest forward position.

  3. Lock the steering column.
  4. Install the J 28662 , or equivalent, to the brake pedal.
  5. Start the engine.
  6. Allow the engine to idle for a minimum of 3 seconds.
  7. Complete the following steps 4 times within 40 seconds:
  8. 6.1. Apply the brakes with 150 N (34 lb) of force to the brake pedal, as indicated on the J 28662 .
    6.2. Release the brakes

  9. With the engine running at idle speed, measure and record the distance (1) from the brake pedal to the rim of the steering wheel. Note the points of measurement.
  10. Complete the following steps 3 times:
  11. 8.1. Slowly apply and maintain the brakes with 100 N (22 lb) of force to the brake pedal.
    8.2. While maintaining 100 N (22 lb) of force to the brake pedal, measure and record the distance (2) from the same point on the brake pedal to the same point on the rim of the steering wheel.
    8.3. Release the brakes.
  12. Average the 3 measurements.
  13. Subtract the initial measurement, unapplied (1), from the averaged, applied measurement (2) in order to obtain the brake pedal travel distance.
  14. Specification
    The maximum brake pedal travel, measured with 100 N (22 lb) of force to the brake pedal, the engine on, and the brakes cool, is 60 mm (2.4 in).
