Removal Procedure

Caution: Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In case of contact, take the following actions:

   • Eye contact--rinse thoroughly with water.
   • Skin contact--wash with soap and water.
   • If ingested--consult a physician immediately.

Notice: Brake fluid will damage electrical connections and painted surfaces. Use shop cloths, suitable containers, and fender covers to prevent brake fluid from contacting these areas. Always re-seal and wipe off brake fluid containers to prevent spills.

  1. Use a siphon in order to remove half of the brake fluid from the reservoir.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. If you are replacing the caliper, complete the following steps:

    4.1. Place a container below the brake hose (4) in order to catch the brake fluid.
    4.2. Remove the rear brake hose fitting (5) and the 2 washers (6) from the caliper.
    4.3. Plug the brake hose in order to prevent brake fluid loss or contamination.
    4.4. Discard the 2 washers.

  6. Remove the caliper bolts (1).
  7. Remove the caliper and the bracket from the rotor.

Inspection Procedure

  1. Inspect the disc brake hardware. Repair or replace parts as necessary. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection .
  2. Inspect the caliper. Repair or replace parts as necessary. Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Ensure the mounting surfaces on the backing plate and on the caliper bracket are clean.
  2. Ensure the caliper piston is fully seated in the cylinder bore.

  4. Position the caliper (2) and the bracket over the rotor.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the caliper bolts (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  8. If you replaced the caliper, complete the following steps:

    5.1. Remove the plug from the brake hose (4).
    5.2. Install 2 NEW washers (6) to the brake hose.
    5.3. Install the brake hose to the caliper.
    5.4. Install the brake hose fitting (5).

    Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. With the engine OFF, gradually apply and release the brake pedal several times in order to position the caliper pistons and the brake pads.
  13. Fill the master cylinder reservoir. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling in Hydraulic Brakes.
  14. If you installed the brake hose fitting, bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
