EL-46844 Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Removal Tool

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
  3. Rotate the steering wheel 90 degree to expose 2 of the 4 access holes in the rear of the steering wheel hub.

  5. Use EL-46844 to relieve the tension of the 2 spring loaded retaining clips. When tension is released the steering wheel module will move slightly away from the steering wheel.
  6. Rotate the steering wheel 180 degree to expose the other 2 access holes in the rear of the steering wheel hub.
  7. Use EL-46844 to relieve the tension of the 2 spring loaded retaining clips. When tension is released the steering wheel module will move slightly away from the sterling wheel.

  9. Disconnect the steering wheel module connector (2).
  10. Important: When disconnecting connector (1) take care to avoid damage to the wiring harness.

  11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors (1 and 4).
  12. Remove the steering wheel module (3).
  13. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling and Scrapping .

Installation Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Connect the wiring harness connectors (1 and 4).
  2. Connect the steering wheel module electrical connector (2).
  3. Important: Ensure the wiring harness connectors and wiring harness is not exposed or trapped between the steering wheel module and the steering wheel hub.

  4. Install the steering wheel module (3). Align the module to the 4 retaining clips on the steering wheel and press the steering wheel module toward the steering wheel until the retaining clips lock.
  5. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
