POWER STEERING HOSE INTERFERENCE WITH MANUAL TRANSAXLE SHIFT LINKAGE
Some 1988 model "N" vehicles equipped with 2.3L Quad 4 (VIN Code D) engines and 5-speed manual transaxles may exhibit a condition where the power steering hoses interfere with the shift linkage.
Customers may comment on difficulty shifting the transaxle into reverse.
If this condition is found, install a retaining strap, part number 11509088, as shown in Figure 1 to secure the power steering hoses away from the shift linkage. The strap should be tightened enough to attain 6 mm (1/4 inch) clearance above the engine wire harness clip, while maintaining 25 mm (1 inch) clearance between the transaxle vent tube and the nearest power steering hose.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
