BRACE TO INTAKE MANIFOLD AND BOLTS, ENGINE TO MANUAL TRANSAXLE
Certain 1988 Pontiac Grand Am Models with Turbo-charged Engine (VIN Code M) and Manual 5-Speed Transaxle (MG1)
--------- General Motors of Canada has determined that some 1988 Pontiac Grand Am models equipped with turbocharged engines and manual five-speed transaxles were produced with a without a brace between the engine block and the intake manifold. Without the brace, the intake manifold may crack, resulting in poor driveability and increased noise. Also, two bolts which fasten the transaxle to the engine block may be missing. Without these attaching bolts, the transaxle housing may crack, leading to loss of transmission fluid, eventual damage to internal transaxle parts, and loss of transmission operation.
To prevent this from occurring, Dealers are to inspect vehicles and if the above parts are missing, install them per the Vehicles Involved and Service Procedure sections of this bulletin.

1. Install vehicle on a hoist. Raise and prop the hood open.
INSPECTION AND INSTALLATION OF BRACE, ENGINE BLOCK TO INTAKE MANIFOLD
2. Look under the intake manifold for brace, part (1) in Figure 1.
3. If brace is present, proceed to step 10.
4. If brace is missing, disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery, raise vehicle and inspect the mounting bosses of the intake manifold (to cylinder head) for cracks. If cracks are found, replace intake manifold.
5. Confirm that Stud, (4) in Figure 1, is present on boss of engine block. If required, install Stud (part number 10012815) into boss of block; torque to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).
6. Position brace (part number 10045015) with battery cables and engine wiring harness between brace and engine as shown in Figure 2. Assemble nut (part number 11500424) finger tight to brace on Stud.
7. Lower vehicle again and torque bolt 14060613, (3) in Figure 1, to 25 N.m (19 lbs. ft.).

13. Inspect mounting bosses of the transaxle (to engine block). If bosses are cracked, replace the transaxle case.
PRIOR ZONE APPROVAL IS REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE TRANSAXLE CASE.
14. Install bolt, part number 11504299, at position (3) as shown in Figure 3. Torque bolt to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.). It may be necessary to use a thin wall socket or "crow's foot".
15. Under engine/transaxle mounting bracket, at bolt location (4), Figure 3, install bolt, part number 11504299. Torque to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.). Use a 19 mm universal socket and 12 inch extension; a small piece of tape on the hex surfaces of the bolt will aid in retaining it in the socket.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
