---------- Some owners of 1992 "N" Pontiac Grand Am cars may comment on a condition where the lower instrument panel compartment door may work partially open over rough road conditions or inclines, allowing the instrument panel compartment lamp to illuminate, potentially discharging the battery.
------ Instrument Panel (I/P) compartment door lacks a positive stop.
----------- A retainer, P/N 22584137, is available to give the compartment door a positive stop. Remove lower I/P compartment as outlined in the 1992 Pontiac Grand Am Service Manual.
1. Using retainer as a template, mark two holes as shown in Figure 1.
2. Drill two 3.175mm (1/8") holes and remove burrs from inside the I/P compartment.
3. Position retainer inside I/P compartment with legs outside I/P compartment.
4. Rivet retainer in place using 2 rivets, p/n 9424862, as shown in Figure 2.
5. Reinstall lower I/P compartment.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
