TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK AT STRUCTURAL SIDE COVER PAN

SUBJECT: TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK AT STRUCTURAL SIDE COVER PAN (INSTALL REPLACEMENT SERVICE GASKET)

MODELS: 1994 CHEVROLET BERETTA, CORSICA, LUMINA 1994 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1993-94 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME 1994 PONTIAC GRAND AM, GRAND PRIX 1994 BUICK SKYLARK, REGAL

TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS:

1993-94 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RP0 M13)

TRANSAXLE MODELS:

3BHW, 4AFW, 4BLW, 4CLW 4CWW, 4PBW, 4PHW, 4WBW, 4WSW WITH A STRUCTURAL (CAST ALUMINUM) SIDE COVER PAN, AND TRANSAXLE CASE I.D. 723

CONDITION: (FIGURE 1 AND 2) SOME OWNERS MAY EXPERIENCE AN AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK BETWEEN THE STRUCTURAL SIDE COVER PAN AND TRANSAXLE CASE.

CAUSE: (FIGURE 3) A CASTING CHANGE WAS IMPLEMENTED TO TRANSAXLE CASE I.D. 723 WHICH REDUCED THE THICKNESS OF A SECTION OF CASE WALL AFFECTING THE SIDE COVER GASKET'S SEALING ABILITY WHEN USED WITH A STRUCTURAL COVER PAN.

CORRECTION:

REPLACE THE ORIGINAL CASE SIDE COVER GASKET WITH A NEW REPLACEMENT SERVICE GASKET. THE REPLACEMENT GASKET LISTED BELOW SHOULD ONLY BE USED ON 1993-94 4T60-E TRANSAXLES THAT CONTAIN A STRUCTURAL SIDE COVER PAN, CASE I.D. 723 AND AN EXTERNAL SIDE PAN LEAK.

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN ONLY PERTAINS TO VEHICLES THAT CONTAIN A STRUCTURAL SIDE COVER AND CASE I.D. 723. EXTERNAL LEAKS ON TRANSAXLES THAT CONTAIN A STAMPED (STEEL) SIDE COVER PAN OR TRANSAXLES WITH STRUCTURAL SIDE COVERS AND CASE I.D.'S OTHER THAN 723 SHOULD REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL (SECTION 7A AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE) FOR INFORMATION REGARDING FLUID LEAK DIAGNOSIS.
