INFORMATION ON IGNITION KEY AND LOCK CYLINDER CHANGES

Subject: INFORMATION ON IGNITION KEY AND LOCK CYLINDER CHANGES

Models Affected: 1993 GRAND AM MODELS

General Motors has made styling and design improvements to the ignition keys and lock cylinders. This change removes the center groove on each side of the key and shortens the outer groove by 8mm. (See Figure 1). The old key blank (P/N 26018738) is interchangeable on both old and new lock cylinders. The new key blank is functional only in a new lock cylinder since internal lock modifications were made to accept the removal of the center key grooves. These changes were made in November of 1992 (1993 model year).

Dealers should continue to use the old key blank (P/N 26018738) on BOTH old and new lock cylinders to maintain interchangeability and to avoid changes in key cutter equipment.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
