SLOW/NO TCC APPLY OR SHUDDER REPLVALVE BODY COVER GASKET

SUBJECT: SLOW/NO TCC APPLY OR TCC SHUDDER (REPLACE AUXILLIARY VALVE BODY COVER GASKET)

MODELS AFFECTED: 1993 GRAND AM MODELS WITH 2.3L SOHC ENGINE (RPO L40)

TRANSAXLE APPLICATIONS: 1993 HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 (THM 125-C) RPO MD9

TRANSAXLE MODEL: 3CWC

CONDITION:

--------- Some 1993 Grand Am models with a 2.3L SOHC engine (RPO L40) and HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 transaxle may have slow TCC apply, TCC shudder or no TCC apply. Cars that may have this condition have transaxle model 3CWC with Julian dates of 221 and earlier (August 9, 1992).

CAUSE:

----- The suspect HYDRA-MATIC 3T40 transaxles were built with auxiliary valve body cover gaskets intended for a different model.

CORRECTION:

---------- Install the correct auxiliary valve body cover gasket.

SERVICE INFORMATION:

Only a small number of vehicles built with the incorrect auxiliary valve body cover gasket will possibly generate a customer concern. The customer would first notice torque converter clutch shudder, which can then wear out the clutch material and cause a loss of torque converter clutch apply.

If the vehicle has come in for service and the transaxle has torque converter shudder or no TCC apply, first replace the auxiliary valve body cover gasket. If the transaxle still has TCC shudder or no TCC apply, first replace the torque converter.
