SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE-SECTION 6E3-DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS-REVISED DTC P0440, P0442, P0446 AND P1441

MODELS: 1996-97 BUICK SKYLARK 1996-97 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 1996-97 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1996-97 PONTIAC GRAND AM, SUNFIRE

1996-97 CHEVROLET AND GMC TRUCK S MODELS WITH 2.2L, 2.4L ENGINES (VINS 4, T - RPOS LN2, LD9)

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING ISSUED TO REVISE THE FOLLOWING EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES FOR THE 1996-97 ENHANCED EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.2L AND 2.4L ENGINES:

* DTC P0440 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM/CONTROL SYSTEM * DTC P0442 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) CONTROL SYSTEM - SMALL LEAK DETECTED * DTC P0446 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) CONTROL SYSTEM - VENT CONTROL/BLOCKED * DTC P1441 - EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) CONTROL SYSTEM FLOW DURING NON PURGE

1996 MANUALS ONLY:

SOME DIFFICULTY MAY BE NOTICED WHEN TRYING TO CLEAR EVAP RELATED DTCS, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO VERIFY IF THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REPAIRED. TO PROPERLY CLEAR EVAP RELATED DTCS, THE BATTERY MUST BE DISCONNECTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS. THE DIAGNOSTIC SCAN TOOL CAN BE USED TO CONFIRM IF THE DTCS WERE CLEARED.

THE FINAL STEP OF THE INDICATED DTCS SHOULD BE REVISED TO INCLUDE THIS PROCEDURE AS THE LAST STEP OF EACH DIAGNOSTIC TABLE.

1996 AND 1997 MANUALS:

NOTE THAT THE YES AND NO COLUMNS HAVE BEEN SWAPPED FOR THE ORIGINAL LAST STEP IN DTCS P0440 AND P0442.

THE REVISIONS AS THEY SHOULD APPEAR ARE ATTACHED. PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF THESE REVISONS IN YOUR SERVICE MANUAL.
